Bubble Recipe

Bubble Refill JugKids of all ages love blowing bubbles and, with four boys, I keep this activity in my back pocket and use it often.  It’s always super fun – well . . . until one of the kids spills his bubble liquid and you don’t have another bottle on hand!  As luck would have it, I came across this great idea on Pinterest (where else, right?) and ran with it.

You can use any jug or bucket you have on hand for this.  For the item pictured, I shopped around online and ended up going with this jug I found on Amazon.com (the item description says its capacity is 3.8 gallons, but that info is wrong – it’s actually 1 gallon, or maybe slightly more than that . . . the perfect size for what I needed) and I have had NO issues with the spout leaking.  I have also seen jugs like this online with many other retailers.  The jug cost $16, but this idea will definitely save us in the long run – we’ll save money not buying more bubble bottles, of course, but I’ll save little bits of my sanity along the way in not having to deal with those bubble-spilling meltdowns.  Hooray!

I had the black stick-on letters left over from another project, so the “Bubble Refills” label was easy.  The letters weren’t necessary, of course, but they made me happy.  =)   We have old bubble bottles on hand already, so just fill those up when they get low.

Next, I made up the bubble mixture.  I used the recipe below – making three batches to fill the jar up about 2/3 of the way (the photo shown here is after my boys have topped off a couple of their individual bubble bottles).  You could probably triple the ingredients, going through the heating & mixing process just one time (if you had a large enough microwave safe container), but you would need to increase the heating time slightly for more liquid.

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups water

½ cup light corn syrup

½ cup Dawn dish washing liquid

Directions:

Put water and corn syrup in a bowl and microwave for 3-4 minutes.  Stir to combine.  Gently mix in dish washing liquid. That’s it!

The above recipe is very simple and makes great bubbles.  It is one of two bubble recipes featured by Laura on cometogetherkids.com.  Thanks Laura!
